Sydney has been confirmed as the new host city for the Australian PGA Championship.

With work starting on the upgrading of Royal Queensland – which has hosted the Australian PGA since 2022 – ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, the event has moved interstate and will be played at The Lakes Golf Club from November 26-29.

It’s the first time the PGA will be held outside of Queensland since 1999, when it was staged at Melbourne’s Victoria Golf Club.

The Lakes has hosted the PGA three times, the most recent of which was in 1998.

“The city is synonymous with world-class sporting events and we are thrilled that we are able to return to The Lakes Golf Club,” PGA of Australia chief executive Gavin Kirkman said.

“The venue has a rich history in hosting PGA Tour of Australasia events, so we know we are in for a warm welcome in November.”

The event, won last year by Spaniard David Puig, will again be co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and the DP World Tour, kicking off the latter’s new season.

DP World Tour chief tournament and operations officer Ben Cowen said: “Our members thoroughly enjoy opening our season down under, with the BMW Australian PGA Championship in particular a key launchpad for the Race to Dubai.

“We look forward to another fantastic edition in Sydney later this year. As golf’s global tour, we take great pride in providing our members with pathways to the world stage, allowing players to compete with the very best at the highest levels of the game.

“Co-sanctioned events such as this one are an important part of making this possible.”

The PGA will take place the week before the Australian Open, which is being held at Melbourne’s Kingston Heath layout, where the tournament drawcard will be back-to-back Masters champion Rory McIlroy.
