Welcome to our live coverage of US politics.

Donald Trump has left Beijing after two days of pomp and ceremony with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Teh US President said Mr Xi had “become really a friend”

But one analyst has said China offered “very little” to the US.

‘Get the f*** out’: Wild hot mic at Trump, Xi summit

Mr Trump confirmed tariffs were not discussed and he had not discussed China pushing Iran to opening the Strait of Hormuz. Hong Kong democrat Jimmy Lai also seems no closer to being released from jail.

Taiwan was discussed “a lot” said Mr Trump who did not commit to defending the island nation Beijing covets. But US leaders rarely make a definitive statement on that. He did leave open the possibility, however, of stopping some arms sales to Taiwan.

The US President insisted he felt China would not invade Taiwan. And China did not succeed in the US changing its stance on the nation’s status.

In other matters, Mr Trump weighed on the UK’s political woes saying Keir Starmer was a “nice man” and offered him advice on saving his job.

In Beijing, footage of Elon Musk has gone viral after the he took a very stilted selfie with one of his EV rivals Lei Jun. Mr Musk huffed and pugged and look bored at the whole interaction.
