Donald Trump has done a dramatic semi U-turn on Iran declaring that the US will now “postpone” threatened strikes against the country’s power plants which could have happened as soon as Monday, US time.

Trump deploys ICE to US airports

The US president said “good and productive” talks had occurred with representatives from Iran. But if there was no satisfactory conclusion to those discussions “we’ll just keep bombing our little hearts out”.

Mr Trump’s threat to take out Iran’s power plants had alarmed many as it could directly affect the Iranian people not just the regime.

But Tehran has insisted no such talks have taken place.

“We deny what US President Donald Trump said regarding negotiations taking place between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Iran’s foreign ministry has said.

Meanwhile a Democrat critic of Mr Trump has said the US president “panicked”.

Senator Chris Murphy said attacks on energy infrastructure would be a “war crime” but he was more concerned with the sinking stock market.

“This isn’t a message to Iran. It’s a panicky message to the markets: ‘No war escalation until markets close on Friday’”.
