Commuters faced major delays across Sydney’s transport network on Thursday night, with metro services cut and disruptions to the train system after a severe storm swept through the city.

Services across the M1 metro line were completely shut down following the storm, but partially restored at 7.05pm. The stretch between Chatswood and Barangaroo stations remained closed until just prior to 9pm due to a power supply issue between Barangaroo and Victoria Cross stations. The line had reopened by 9.30pm, skipping Crows Nest due to an issue with doors on the platform.

Heavy rail train services were also down on the T1 North Shore line between Gordon and North Sydney stations in both directions “due to severe weather conditions affecting infrastructure”, Transport for NSW said. Trains between Gordon and Berowra were also disrupted.

Some trains were forced to stop on platforms or between stations for longer than usual as passengers were urged to delay travel or consider alternatives.

There were also delays on the T1 Western Line, T2 Leppington & Inner West Line, T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line and T5 Cumberland Line.

On the T2 and T3 train lines, services in both directions between Liverpool, Cabramatta and the city were diverted via Regents Park station.

The severe weather swept across Sydney right on peak hour and caused chaos for commuters, many of whom might otherwise have driven if not for the fuel shortage.

More bad weather is forecast for the Friday morning and evening commutes, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a 95 per cent chance of rain. There is a chance of thunderstorms in the morning and afternoon, with possible squalls above 40 knots.
