A high-ranking South Australian police officer has made a public apology after being busted using his mobile phone while riding a bicycle.
South Australia police traffic services branch officer-in-charge superintendent Shane Johnson has been issued with an expiation notice after he was caught in the act on October 18 last year.
Superintendent Johnson explained he was at the end of a 202km bicycle ride with friends, within a hundred metres from his home when the incident occurred.
“I was less than one hundred metres from my home,” he said.
“Riding at just a few kilometres an hour in a backstreet with no other vehicles present when I took the picture while winding down from the ride.
“This is not an excuse for my lapse in judgement. No-one is immune from road traffic laws.
“This incident reinforces that everyone can have a lapse in judgement – including myself.
“This is precisely why police are continually reinforcing road safety messages and urging people to remain vigilant and alert on the roads.”
The matter is now subject to a conduct investigation.
