The texts show Sayers profusely apologising to his wife after she felt she was being blamed for the image of his penis appearing on his X account.
Sayers, who reportedly told Carlton and the AFL that Cate was responsible for the photo being posted, says in the texts that a hacker was behind the tweet.
The text message exchange, which happened between January 22-23 2025 – after Sayers resigned from his post at Carlton – have now been revealed.
“I’ve left Carlton just announced,” writes Sayers.
Cate responds: “Wondered why I just received a swuillion messages from people in oz. I don’t like the last line – everyone now thinks I posted it ‘someone who has access to his account’.”
Sayers: “No they don’t… I was very clear about pursuing this hack privately from this day forward…which I am on.”
Cate then hits back: “No Luke – read the media. You are once again cleared – you looked after yourself well but your media people have left it on me – thanks.”
The messages from Cate continue: “I am furious with you. I need space.
“You saved yourself and again dumped me right in it as the person who accessed your account. Read the media narrative. I am gutted and don’t think I can ever return to Australia now.”
Luke then admits: “I was hacked. I’ve said it repeatedly. It’s like bs I pushed Dan Andrews down the stairs… its [sic] all c***. The bottom line is we are together, we are one, and we are setting how it should have been five years ago. I love you. Pls can we meet now for a coffee to talk through.”
The above text messages have come to light as a result of a court case brought forward by Cate.
She alleges her husband tried to taint her reputation by claiming she was not only responsible for the post, but that her defence could not be believed because she suffers from bipolar and multi-personality disorder and had not been taking her prescribed medication.
The AFL failed to interview Cate during their investigation into the post, despite the integrity unit deeming her a “person relevant” to the matter.
Cate denies posting the photo and claims the affair has breached her privacy and damaged her public profile.
