Australian superstar Sam Kerr has broken new ground by becoming Chelsea’s all-time record scorer in the Women’s Super League.

The Matilda, 32, headed home the Blues’ opener in a 3-1 victory over Leicester on Sunday to move to 64 goals in the WSL — one clear of Chelsea and England icon Fran Kirby.

Kerr, who joined the English giants in 2020, has racked up the impressive tally in just 92 appearances and picked up two Golden Boot awards along the way.

The Fremantle-born striker, who is already the Matildas’ record scorer with a remarkable 75 goals, has struggled in the WSL this season.

Coming into the Leicester clash, she had bagged just five times in the league — although she has netted another eight in all competitions.

But she showed no signs of rustiness in the 13th minute when she rose brilliantly to head into the far corner.

And she spoke eloquently about breaking Kirby’s record following Chelsea’s win.

Kerr said: “I’m absolutely stoke to break the all-time WSL goal scoring record (for Chelsea). It feels amazing to even be in the same category as some of those players.

“I’m absolutely honoured and it’s been amazing to score 64 goals in front of all of you.

“Let’s finish off the season strong.”

Kerr 'stoked' to break Chelsea record

Chelsea have won the WSL for the past five seasons, but will not be lifting the trophy later this month as they are six points adrift of Manchester City with just one game remaining.

Arsenal still boast an outside chance of the title if they win their final four matches and Man City lose to West Ham on the final day.

Meanwhile, Kerr still has some way to go to reach WSL record scorer Vivianne Miedema.

The Dutchwoman, 29, who plays for Man City and previously led the line for Arsenal, has 97 goals and counting in England’s top flight.
