Queensland Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski will retire from the service, with his resignation to take effect before Easter.
Gollschewski, who has served in the police force for half a century, took over the top job from Katarina Carroll in 2024.
At the time, he had been thinking of retiring, but said he could not step away from Queensland Police knowing the state the service was in.
But his reform plans were derailed when he was diagnosed with stage four cancer and was forced to step down in November 2024. He returned to work in September last year declaring he was cancer free.
Gollschewski became a familiar face to Queenslanders during the daily COVID-19 briefings early in the pandemic. He led the security operation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and was also Queensland Disaster Coordinator during several floods and cyclones.
