A young man is fighting for life after being shot by police during a tense incident at a suburban home in Brisbane’s north.

Emergency services were called to a mental health-related situation at a property on Akebia St in Arana Hills about 12.30pm on Wednesday, where officers attempted to engage with a 19-year-old man.

During the encounter, an “altercation” unfolded and the man, who was believed to be holding a large knife, was shot once by police.

It is understood officers tried to subdue him with a Taser twice before the shooting.

The man was treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Multiple officers were seen outside the home on Wednesday afternoon, with police tape stretched across the driveway as the scene was secured. A woman was also observed speaking with officers nearby.

Police said in a statement that officers provided first aid at the scene, before the man was taken to hospital in a “critical condition”.

An internal investigation has now been launched into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

“The matter will be investigated by the Ethical Standards Command with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission,” police said.
