Perth residents woke to a surreal, silvery blanket of fog draped across the city on Thursday morning.

Images taken from South Perth show thick fog blocking any views of the city, located just 2km across the Swan River.

Main Roads WA warned motorists that fog had reduced visibility on major highways across eastern parts of the city and urged drivers to switch on their headlights.

A major crash on the Great Eastern Highway occurred when a truck and car collided about 7.20am, injuring a 63-year-old man who suffered serious leg injuries.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Grace Abbott said moisture in the air, clear skies and light winds created conditions for the fog.

Humidity levels reached almost 100 per cent overnight.

“We saw quite the amount of fog over inland parts of the Southwest land division, and over parts of Perth as well,” she said.

“The fog built up just before sun rise, and started to clear about an hour after that, and cleared through most parts in the northeast about 10am.”
