Australians that are “sick and tired” of mainstream political parties have helped bolster One Nation in South Australia to win seven spots in the state’s parliament, Pauline Hanson says, as the results bring the once-fringe party level with SA’s Liberal representation.

One Nation has installed four MPs in the lower house and three members of the legislative council (MLC) in the upper house, whereas the Liberals won five MPs and two MLCs.

Senator Hanson described the results as “extraordinary” on Wednesday evening, telling Sky News After Dark the populist party held “nearly 23 per cent of the primary vote” in the state.

“What I keep saying, people want change. They’re sick and tired of these political parties,” she said.

“They don’t have vision for the future. They don’t have answers.

“We’re in the dire mess that we are in this country because their policies under both of them.

“And people want clear policies direction, someone like One Nation who has this country and its people at heart.”

Senator Hanson claimed her rhetoric – which has been described by critics as inflammatory and divisive – has always been in “Australia’s best interest”.

“ … And I’ll keep pushing forward. I’ll keep fighting for the people,” she said.

She confirmed One Nation would “go after” Victoria in the November state election and declared it would also win the hotly contested federal seat of Farrer in the upcoming by-election.
