A manhunt is underway for a gunman after he fired shots during a police pursuit through Sydney’s west on Friday.

Highway patrol officers attempted to stop a Nissan Navara around South Wentworthville at about 9.20pm on Friday, but the driver failed to stop, sparking a pursuit through several streets in nearby Merrylands and Guildford.

The ute was involved in a minor crash with another vehicle on Hawksview Street in Guildford before continuing onto Guildford Road, when the ute stopped near the intersection with Robertson Road.

The driver fled from the scene and fired five shots in the air as he did so, according to NSW Police.

PolAir, the Riot Squad and Dog Squad were called to launch a wide-scale search for the gunman, but he could not be located.

The driver is described as male and was seen wearing a bright orange shirt. No injuries have been reported.

A crime scene was established as police seized the ute and continue to investigate the incident.

Anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
