A man has been arrested in the US after police said he intentionally drove his Tesla Cybertruck into a lake to test out the vehicle’s “wade mode”.
Footage shared online captured the moment the man drove the Cybertruck – which can cost upwards of $US60,000 ($A84,000) – into Grapevine Lake in north Texas on Monday, US time.
Before long, the vehicle began to take on water and became stuck.
Footage shows the driver and his passenger abounding the partially submerged vehicle and climbing out of the passenger side window, before making their way back to the shore.
‘Wade mode’ allows Cybetrucks “to enter and drive through bodies of water, such as rivers or creeks”. However it can only be used at maximum depths of 81.5 cm, according to Tesla’s online manual.
“It is your responsibility to gauge the depth of any body of water before entering. Damage or water ingress to Cybertruck as a result of driving in water is not covered by the warranty,” the manual states.
Local police said officers were called to Katie’s Woods Park Boat Ramp around 8pm on Monday, where they found the truck disabled in the water near the shoreline.
The driver was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle in a closed section of the lake other water safety equipment violations.
The vehicle had to be removed from the lake with the help of Grapevine Fire Department Water Rescue Team.
“The driver stated he intentionally drove into the lake to use the Cybertruck’s ‘Wade Mode’ feature,” Grapevine Police Department said in a statement on social media.
“We want to remind drivers that although a vehicle may be physically capable of entering shallow freshwater areas, doing so can create legal and safety concerns under Texas law.”
