A woman has allegedly been threatened by a gun-wielding man in a carpark in Sydney’s west, sparking a major police operation.

Police swarmed the area surrounding Paddock St and Uhrig Rd in Lidcombe at about 7.20am on Tuesday after a man, who witnesses said was armed with a handgun, threatened a woman in a multi-level carpark.

The man, who was not known to the woman, fled the scene in a white Subaru SUV with cloned number plates, police say.

“There was a male in the passenger seat who had the firearm but also there was another driver, potentially a female,” Superintendent Robert Toynton said.

He described the man as being of medium build. He was wearing a grey hoodie and a balaclava.

The incident sparked a huge police response, with specialist police called to the scene and members of the public urged to avoid the area as the operation unfolded.

Roads affected included Uhrig Rd and Carter and Canning streets.

Police say no shots have been confirmed as being fired.

The woman was shaken but not physically injured, police say.

Anyone with information relevant to this incident is urged to contact police.

This follows a nearby incident where a man was fatally shot and another was assaulted in Shale St in Lidcombe on Monday.

Abdullah Bahsa, 38, was shot in the abdomen and died in hopsital. His friend who was with him at the time was allegedly assaulted and suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
