A man accused of throwing an explosive device into the middle of a Perth Invasion Day rally has faced court for the first time since being charged over the alleged attack.
Liam Alexander Hall, 32, appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday via video link from the Frankland Centre, a mental health facility, where the charges were read to him over the alleged incident on January 26.
Mr Hall has been charged with an act of terrorism after allegedly hurling a homemade bomb – made from a glass container filled with liquid, screws and ball bearings – into a crowd.
The alleged device failed to detonate during the rally attended by thousands gathered at Forrest Chase in the city’s CBD.
Witnesses claimed the alleged bomb was encased in an Elsa-themed sock from the film Frozen.
Police evacuated thousands of people from the area after they were alerted about the suspicious device that was thrown into the crowd.
Mr Hall also faces charges of making or possessing explosives and intent to harm, omitted to do any act that it was the person’s duty or did any act as a result of which the life, health or safety of any person was likely to be endangered.
In court, Mr Hall said he understood the charges when they were read out to him by magistrate Heidi Watson
His lawyer Simon Freitag said he had spoken to Mr Hall and he knew he would not have to enter a plea on Tuesday.
The matter was referred to the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court for a committal mention hearing on September 16.
