Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli has rolled to a dominant victory at the Japanese Grand Prix, finishing well clear of Aussie Oscar Piastri.

The 19-year-old becomes the first teenager to win back-to-back races and also the youngest championship leader in Formula 1 history, moving past teammate George Russell atop the standings.

Antonelli started the race from pole position but fell down to sixth after a slow start which saw Piastri pounce and pinch the race lead away.

The McLaren star was confident he could hold off his rivals in the early stages, before a safety car played into the hands of Antonelli and stole the victory away from Piastri.

After being gifted a free stop under the safety car, Antonelli raced away and finished around 14 seconds ahead of the field.

Piastri completed his first race of the season and finished ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ George Russell.

“Turns out when we start these things we’re pretty good,” Piastri said on team radio after the race.
