Indonesia has been rocked by a “strong” magnitude 6.2 earthquake near Bali.

The earthquake was recorded in the Sumba region – east of Bali and 198km southeast of the island of Bima – at 2.44pm Malaysian local time on May 5.

In a statement, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said the epicentre of the earthquake was located at a latitude of 10.1° South and longitude 119.5° East with a depth of 10km

“(There is) no tsunami threat to Malaysia,” the department’s statement continued.

Geoscience Australia has since revised the magnitude of the quake to 5.8.

Media Selangor – the official media agency of the Selangor State Government located in Malaysia – reports the earthquake was felt in several areas of Sumba, including Waingapu, Tambolaka, Waibakul and Waikabubak.

“Based on the location of the epicentre and the depth of the hypocentre, the earthquake is a shallow earthquake,” Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency acting director of earthquakes and tsunami Rahmat Triyono told the outlet.
