One country has narrowly overtaken England for the top spot as the nation with the largest group of people born overseas in Australia.
Indian-born residents now make up 971,020 of the 8.8 million people born overseas, while the UK-born population sits at 970,950, new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed.
Last year, almost every country was represented in the birthplaces of Australia’s population, the ABS said.
People born in India also recorded the largest increase in the decade between 2015-2025, with more than 500,000 people.
Figures from the decade between 2015-2025 showed four countries – India, China, the Philippines and Nepal – making it to the top four places of birth, with a combined increase of more than one million people.
In the same decade, four countries – England, Italy, Greece and Germany – had a combined decrease of more than 100,000 people.
The earliest records from 1891 show that 32 per cent of people were born overseas.
More than five decades after, because of the two World Wars and the Great Depression, the figure dropped down to only 10 per cent.
The flow of migration over the past 20 years has been steady with an average three per cent annual growth rate.
