Construction on Brisbane’s Olympic stadium will begin on June 1, the Crisafulli government announced on the eve of the one-year anniversary of its delivery plan release.
And there was also new imagery of the seating bowl design from the consortium of Australian firms Cox Architecture and Hassell, along with Japan’s Azusa Sekkei, which were announced as successful tenderers at the start of the year.
Images released by the Queensland government on Tuesday evening show the stadium in both legacy cricket and AFL mode.
They show three main tiers of seating, with additional tiers in corporate areas, and a halo-style video board along the circumference of the roof.
They also show gaps in the seating bowl at either end, behind video screens, to allow breeze into the stadium.
A spokesman for Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said preparatory work on the stadium’s construction would begin on Monday, June 1 – the day Victoria Park’s land tenure was due to be transferred to the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority.
While the exact location of the stadium was yet to be finally determined, on the day his firm’s successful tender was announced Cox Architecture chairman Richard Coulson identified a site, in a valley between Gilchrist Avenue and QUT’s Kelvin Grove campus, as the best location.
For the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the 63,000-seat Brisbane Stadium was slated to host athletics and track and field, along with the opening and closing ceremonies.
Post-Games, it would serve as Brisbane’s new home of AFL and cricket, with the Gabba set to be demolished after it makes its Olympic swansong.
