A Sydney Northern Beaches teacher accused of sexually abusing a student has had her bail varied to allow her to travel to Sydney for court appearances.

Ella Clements, 24, was arrested in September last year and has been accused of sexually abusing an underage student.

She has been charged with one count of an adult maintaining an unlawful relationship with a child, which carries a potential maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

She has also been charged with three back-up offences of three counts of aggravated sexual intercourse with a child under 16.

A further count of intentionally sexually touching a child is due to be withdrawn, according to court records.

She is yet to enter a plea to any of the charges.

Following her arrest, Ms Clements was bailed to live with her parents at Lennox Head and a Northern Rivers medical facility.

She was not present in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday as her solicitor Rachel Fisher made an application to vary her bail conditions.

The bail variation was not opposed by the prosecution and was granted by Judge Greg Grogin.

Under the change she will be allowed to travel for meetings with her lawyers and to attend court, on the condition she notify the officer-in-charge of the investigation 48 hours before her departure.

Ms Clements will next appear in court on June 4.
