A driver has died after crashing into a pole during a motorsport event at Calder Park Raceway on Sunday.

The driver, who is yet to be identified, was competing in the MSCA Super Sprint Championship round-five event at the raceway.

It’s not yet clear whether the driver may have suffered a health event before the crash, but the driver died at the scene.

“Police responded to a fatal single vehicle crash in Calder Park today,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“Emergency services were called to reports of a car crashing into a pole at a racetrack on the Calder Freeway about 10.05am.

“The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, who is yet to be formally identified, sadly died at the scene.

“Police will prepare a report for the coroner. WorkSafe has been notified.”

Motorsport Australia issued a statement on Sunday confirming a “critical incident” during Sunday’s event.

“Motorsport Australia’s Critical Incident Plan is in action, and staff are working with the relevant authorities following this incident,” the statement said.

“We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the competitor, and our thanks go to the officials and first responders at the scene.”

MSAC declined to make further comment beyond the statement.

The super sprint series is described as a grassroots, community racing series for people who love motorsport.

“These events are a great opportunity for our family of clubs to enjoy grassroots motorsport in a safe, inclusive, and fun environment – with some light-hearted but spirited competition,” MSCA said on its website.
