A driver who narrowly escaped a flaming wreck thanks to the help of good Samaritans allegedly bit the leg of a police officer trying to breathalyse him in Sydney’s west.

Emergency services were called to Maugham Crescent in Wetherill Park about 11.20pm on Sunday after a Toyota SUV had crashed into a parked car and gone up in flames.

Police say a 35-year-old man, understood to be the driver of the vehicle, was pulled from the wreck by a group of bystanders.

“Officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command were informed that prior to the crash, the vehicle crashed into another car on Hassall St being driven by a 64-year-old man,” a police spokesman said.

“The vehicle has then driven on and had a crash with a 41-year-old man before finally crashing in Magham Crescent.”

Police said the driver failed to stop after the first two collisions; however, his vehicle finally came to a stop when it struck an unoccupied vehicle.

As Fire and Rescue NSW crews worked on putting out the blaze, police attempted to breathalyse the man. He allegedly “bit an officer on the leg and refused to submit to a roadside breathe test”.

The officer did not require hospital treatment.
