Rory McIlroy suffered an awkward moment after being bizarrely called out by Donald Trump.

The golfer attended a White House state banquet where he was made to stand up by the US president.

Trump interrupted his own speech to hail McIlroy’s Masters triumph, making the Northern Irishman blush.

McIlroy sheepishly smiled and waved at the audience before regaining his seat next to Trump’s daughter Ivanka.

The president had been hailing the “unconquerable courage” of the soldiers in the D-Day landings when he thought of McIlroy.

“The entire world has been uplifted by this distinct and special character we share. This unstoppable daring, this unconquerable courage,” Trump said.

“It really is, it’s unconquerable. Speaking of that, where’s Rory McIlroy? Stand up Rory, will you please?

“That was unconquerable courage. That was very good Rory.

“I had to interrupt my speech because I watched that man win a tournament that was a tough … that was a tough one. Congratulations, very proud of you.”

Since becoming just the fourth man in history to defend the Masters this month, McIlroy has taken an understandable break from competition.

The six-time Major champion understandably skipped the RBC Heritage and Zurich Classic after his success at Augusta.

He had also been signed up to play The Cadillac at Trump’s National Doral in Miami this week, but pulled out of the field.
