Ex-Broncos assistant coach Ben Te’o has broken his silence on his bombshell decision to resign from his post as defence coach of the Brisbane club.

Te’o made the shock decision to step down from his role a year after winning a drought-breaking first title in 19 years for the club as Michael Maguire’s assistant.

The decision three games into the 2026 season came after a reported altercation with Maguire in the lead-up to the club’s win over the Storm.

There were also reports that Te’o was denied the chance to coach the Maroons after being recommended by Titans coach Josh Hannay to Billy Slater as a replacement for his role for Queensland.

Te’o didn’t clarify the reasons for his decision, but revealed on Triple M he was more than comfortable he made the right call.

“I’m going really well,: Te’o said on Triple M.“It’s been a big week for me. Probably the first part of the week for me was the toughest and it is always unfortunate when things go this way.

“But all I can say is that I am someone who is pretty strong and I know what is important to me and where I am going in my coaching career and this was the decision that I came up with and I’m very comfortable with it.”

Te’o’s first words came after Maguire was reluctant to go into details with the media over his exit from his post ahead of the win over the Dolphins.

“Look, he submitted his resignation and now we’ve taken that. And that’s all I’m going to talk about,” Maguire said.

“I’m going to stick to my line here. I do apologise if you want more, but we’ve got a playing group in there. I’ve got a staff in there.

“We’ve got a really important game tomorrow night.”

Te’o’s next move is unclear, with the vacant Sea Eagles post a potential landing spot, while he has been linked to a reunion with Souths under Wayne Bennett, the club he won a premiership for as a player in 2014.
