An 11-year-old girl has died following a car crash two days ago in Melbourne’s east, which occurred after her mother, who was driving, allegedly failed to give way at an intersection.

The 11-year-old girl was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in critical condition alongside her four-year-old brother, who suffered severe but not non-life-threatening injuries after the Toyota Corolla they were travelling in collided with a Nissan Skyline at the intersection of Wallace Road and High Street Road in Wantirna South about 8.20pm on Thursday night.

Police confirmed the young girl died on Friday night.

The children’s mother, a 38-year-old Knoxfield woman, was taken to hospital with minor injuries, while their father, a 38-year-old Knoxfield man, was uninjured.

The occupants of the Nissan, two 18-year-old men, stopped at the scene. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the teenagers had been taken to Maroondah Hospital for minor injuries.

Speaking from the scene on Thursday night, Detective Sergeant Stephen Hill from Victoria Police’s major collision investigation unit said the crash appeared to have been caused by the 38-year-old woman failing to give way to the Nissan.

“It’s an absolute tragic collision, and I’m sure it’ll be tragic for the families,” he said.

Detectives are appealing for dashcam footage following the crash.

The officer said police would also be reviewing if the children had been properly restrained in the back seat of the car.
