Rabbitohs icon Alex Johnston produced a “miracle take” before storming clear to score a 90-yard try against the Bulldogs.

The 31-year-old, who last month became the all-time leading try-scorer in NRL history, stole the show yet again after just five minutes on Friday afternoon.

With the Bulldogs pressing for the opening try of the game, Johnston brilliantly intercepted a pass on his own 10-metre line.

He then beautifully pirouetted and set off sprinting clear as the Dogs’ back line frantically tried to chase him.

But there was no catching Johnston as he flew beyond two diving challenges on his way to a 97th try at Stadium Australia.

Describing Johnston’s moment of brilliance, commentator Greg Alexander said: “Alex Johnston comes up with a miracle take and the speed he has means he just outlasts Montoya.

“What a play. What a play from Alex Johnston. That is an incredible take. And then he has the speed to go all the way.

“That is fantastic. What an effort from him.”

Rugby League Immortal rocked by April Fools gag

Some fans took to social media to hail Johnston, with NoWarmUpSportsY saying: “Alex Johnston is the Goat.”

And Beerboy182 said: “I still think we should be storming the field every time Alex Johnston breaks the try scoring record.”

Yet despite his stunning try in the opening moments of the game, Rabbitohs fans were left furious at him before half-time when he dropped a fairly simple catch which allowed Enari Tuala to pick up and hand it to Sitili Tupouniua to score.

Reacting to the nightmare mistake, DoIneed2ToDoThis said: “Alex Johnston might be the greatest try scorer in the @NRL but he still can’t defend.”

While UnDiluted7 added: “Alex Johnston might have scored the most tries ever, but his for and against is negative. Don’t at me.”

The Rabbitohs went on to win the game 32-24 to secure a third win from four at the start of the 2026 season.

It leaves Wayne Bennett’s side second in the table, behind only the Panthers.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have followed up successive wins with back-to-back losses at the hands of the Knights and Rabbitohs, results which have seen them slip to sixth.
