Aaron Rai has stunned the golf world after clinching an unexpected victory at the 2026 PGA Championship.

The triumph of Indian-origin British golfer has created a new history as Rai emerged as the first Englishman to win the tournament in the stroke play era after defeating the world’s top golfers.

Against all odds, the 31-year-old Wolverhampton native turned a massive long shot starting position into a career-defining victory. By firing a spectacular, 5-under-par 65 in the final round, he secured the most prestigious title.

In a post-game interview, Rai paid tribute to significant personalities who inspired him to win his very first major championship title.

He recalls idolizing Tiger Woods during his childhood and watching VHS tapes of Woods’ early career multiple times a week, finding it surreal to now have his name alongside him on the trophy.

Rai added, “I think Tiger Wood is such an icon and huge figure in the game and even now. He was like a superhuman. And he was someone whom I idolized very much.”

Talking about sporting personalities who have an influence on Rai, he is also named Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I also used to love soccer as well growing up. Cristiano Ronaldo was incredible for a very long time,” he said.

Known for wearing gloves in both hands, Rai clinched a historic win by draining an 68-foot bridie putt on the 17th hole.

Aaron Rai, the player of South Asian descent, became the first player to raise the Wanamaker Trophy since 1919 when James Barnes did the same thing.
