The A2 Milk Company has recalled multiple batches of baby formula from US shelves after a highly potent toxin was discovered.

Three batches of A2 Platinum USA label infant milk formula which was sold only in the United States have been recalled due to the presence of cereulide.

Symptoms of cereulide typically take effect within 30 minutes to six hours and include nausea and vomiting.

While symptoms typically ease on their own, infants can be at risk of dehydration due to their developing immune systems and receive medical care immediately if symptoms develop.

The product was sold through A2 Milk Company’s website, Amazon and Meijer stores with 16,428 units of formula sold.

Following the announcement today, the Auckland-based company’s shares plummeted on the ASX by 12 per cent from $7.27 to $6.49.

The company said they have not received any reported incidents of illness or harm.

A2 Milk Company’s managing director and chief executive David Bortolussi reassured parents and caregivers the other markets – including Australia – were not impacted by this isolated recall.

The formula with the following batch numbers and use-by dates has been recalled:

  • Batch number 2210269454 and use-by date 15/07/2026
  • Batch number 2210324609 and use-by date 21/01/2027
  • Batch number 2210321712 and use-by date 15/01/2027

Customers who have purchased any of these products are advised to stop using the product, throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.

The company said all A2 Milk Company products sold outside the US are unaffected.
