Dawn Hope of Wahroonga is wondering why Antoinette Riley’s fridge magnets (C8) are unused: “My late husband and I always bought fridge magnets wherever we travelled, and some of them are works of art, especially the Italian ones. A lot of them weren’t cheap either. Our aim was to have an international fridge, and an international filing cabinet, and we succeeded. We also brought them back to give our family their own international fridges. Sadly, I think one branch have thrown theirs out. I’d offer to adopt Antoinette’s, but I’m afraid I’ve finally run out of space.”
“Nigh on two decades ago, my little granddaughter favoured our fridge door with a small magnetised heart, enclosing a photo of herself and the printed caption ‘Friend’s are important’. To which some grump had added ‘So are apostrophes’,” explains Don Bain of Port Macquarie. “It’s on the fridge door to this day.”
“Thanks to Jill Howell (C8) for informing us of the root beer and ice-cream drink known as a Black Cow,” says Peter Moran of Shell Cove. “That explains much about the Steely Dan song Black Cow. Perhaps one of Granny’s readers could now inform us why that same group included a reference to Muswellbrook and kangaroos in their song Black Friday.”
Tim Charles of Tempe adds that “a Black Cow can be found in better confectionery shops in the US. It’s a chewy choc-caramel bar. Break off a bite-sized bit and one can last for days. As for the lyrically opaque Steely Dan track from 1977, the parsing of it can last for weeks, or forever.”
The variation offered by Jeffrey Huang of Roseville is giving Laverne DeFazio vibes: “At our local golf club, they serve a Brown Cow drink made by mixing ginger beer with milk. Despite many screwed up faces, it’s a strangely delicious drink.”
“Cooking one morning, a key ingredient was lacking,” offers Stewart Martin of Mangerton. “With great haste, it was off to the supermarket. There, I wondered why people were giving me a second glance. At the checkout, the assistant said ‘great apron, I just love Daffy Duck.’ Sans apron, it was back to the car, yet people still seemed to be looking at me. A glance in the rear vision mirror revealed a large white comb fetchingly perched across my melon. And yes, I did make it home with my keys and car.”
