Two men have died after their car crashed into a tree and burst into flames in Melbourne’s southeast.

Police say the vehicle was likely speeding along the Princes Highway in Dandenong before the crash at about 1.20am on Wednesday.

Both its occupants died at the scene.

Police believe the pair killed were a 38-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, both from the Dandenong area, though they are yet to be formally identified.

Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy said on Wednesday morning that the car crashed into a tree on the centre median strip before bursting into flames.

A tyre was also found about 100m away from the crash, he said.

The Princes Highway remains closed in both directions between Robinson and Potter Streets, with police warning traffic disruptions are expected for most of the morning.

The crash happened outside Dandenong High School.

“We’re also engaging with the Department of Education to ensure they’re aware of the circumstances,” Inspector McEvoy said.

“They’ll put all the care they can around the school kids to make sure their exposure is reduced as best we can.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, who has dashcam or CCTV footage or any other information, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
