A man charged with animal cruelty after a viral video has eluded his first court appearance after his no-show was excused.

Gold Coast man Thomas John Dunlea, 41, had his case heard before the Southport Magistrates Court on Monday after he was allegedly caught on camera abusing a dog.

Police alleged Mr Dunlea mistreated the dog along Hooker Blvd, at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, around 9.15am on April 30.

In a video captured by motorists, a man drags the dog on its leash as it struggles alongside him before kicking its midsection.

The video sparked severe online outrage, quickly gaining viral status.

Since the alleged incident, the dog has been place in the care of RSPCA.

Mr Dunlea was charged on May 4 with animal cruelty and subsequently granted police bail.

Gold Coast solicitor Ashkan Tai represented Mr Dunlea at a brief mention on Monday, May 18.

Mr Dunlea did not appear in person at the first mention; however, has his appearance excused by the court.

The case was adjourned for further mention on June 8, 2026.

Mr Dunlea’s bail was enlarged and he was excused from appearing at the next mention.
