“Contrary to Wolf Kempa’s parents not being concerned when he got home from Luna Park at 1am when he was a youngster (C8), my parents freaked when I didn’t come home after the end of Hair at the Metro Theatre in Kings Cross last century when I worked there as an usherette,” says Dorothy Gliksman of Cedar Brush Creek. “They were so worried, that they turned up and parked behind my Mini at around 1am to wait for me. I’d been chatting to a friend for some hours and had no clue of the time. They calmed down once they saw I was alive and well.”
It was easier for Lance Dover of Pretty Beach: “Wolf is so right that times have changed. When I was nine, I was allowed to go on the then new air-conditioned North Coast Daylight Express to holiday with my grandparents in Taree. I remember the train hostess took me under her wing and made sure I got off at the right station. A pre-arranged taxi was waiting to take me to my destination. The return was a repeat performance. Great fun all round.”
“Following the news that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have separated, could Ms Kidman now be looking for someone, say, a bit more rural?” muses Ted Richards of Batemans Bay.
Bronwyn Horton of Balgownie recalls that, “in the early 1980s, while farming at Baerami in the upper Hunter region, my husband hit a telephone pole with his tractor. As a result, the single wire that was the party line for the area was wiped out. With a baby and a four-year-old, I had to drive about 45kms to Muswellbrook to report the outage, only to be asked by the storeperson why I just didn’t ring and report it!”
Good grief! “When Granny three years old, a new comic strip started appearing in newspapers in the US,” says Allan Gibson of Cherrybrook. “Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang were the creation of Charles M. Schulz and the strip ran from October 2, 1950 until the creator’s death in 2000. Happy 75th anniversary, Peanuts.”
Thanks to Warren Finnan (C8), Cenny Coast pothole puns are a thing now, as evidenced by Adrienne Steele of Matcham: “Had to come back at Warren about the Terrigal potholes on the Central Coast – I live near Holegate but for potholes you just can’t Matcham.”
