China is “locked and loaded” to enact economic “countermeasures” against the US, a Beijing watcher has said.
The comments come ahead of a summit this week between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping this week.
China is increasingly confident it can cause the US more pain should Washington try and use sanctions and tariffs to browbeat Beijing.
Mr Xi will also be hoping he can persuade the US President to water down his defence of Taiwan and halt new weapons sales to the nation that Beijing covets.
The Summit has already been delayed once due to the Iran war. There are reports Mr Trump dearly wanted the conflict to have reached some kind of conclusion before the superpower meet up.
But Mr Trump said on Sunday, US time, that Tehran’s response to a US peace proposal was “totally unacceptable”.
Iran’s counter proposals demanded the US pay Tehran back for war damage caused as well as recognising Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
