Welcome to our live coverage of the US and Israel’s war with Iran.

Donald Trump has said Iran’s “new regime” has asked for a ceasefire in a Wednesday morning, US time, social media post.

It’s unclear who the US president is dealing with in Tehran who made the request. He said one would only be considered once the Strait of Hormuz was reopened.

Donald Trump has said the US is “strongly considering” leaving the NATO defence pact over, what he sees, as the less than enthusiastic response of many of its members to the Iran war.

NATO is first and foremost a defence alliance against members being invaded or attacked. But Mr Trump has insisted that its members should have rushed to join a conflict they reportedly were not consulted about.

The US leaving NATO would leave a slew of European democracies less defended and be a boon to Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin.

But in remarks following Mr Trump’s NATO bombshell UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer indicated Britain’s position had not changed: “This is not our war. We will not be drawn into the conflict,” he said on Wednesday, UK time.

French President Emmanuel Macron has criticized countries that “could hurt you without even informing you,” seemingly a reference to the US.

Meanwhile, there are reports the UAE is lobbying for UN Security Council authorisation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by force, though Russia and China could veto any resolution.

Read on for live updates.
