Oil prices have soared and share prices have slumped as financial markets have shown their disappointment with Donald Trump’s speech on the Iran War.

Trump claims Iran was "right at the doorstep" of having nukes

The US benchmark oil, West Texas Intermediate, should up to $US113 a barrel on Thursday morning, US time, the highest it has been seen Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

While the US president said the conflict could wrap up in two or three weeks, he has regularly said the war was near to ending and no defined exit strategy or end to hostilities was given. Indeed, he said US attacks on Iran could increase raising fears Tehran could target even more energy infrastructure.

Mr Trump also said the Strait of Hormuz could open “naturally” which did not reassure investors.

Meanwhile, 30 nations have gathered at a meeting organised by the United Kingdom to discuss how to increase oil and gas flows throng the strait. The US declined to attend.

More than 3000 have no died across the Middle East and Iran since hostilities began in February.
