Huh? Another crash? Why is the Red Bull so quick now, Wait… are Williams fast?

Might be some of the phrases viewers said aloud while watching last night’s qualifying session. In case you missed it here’s a rundown of everything you need to know.

Max Verstappen claimed consecutive poles in a chaotic qualifying session marred by crashes, rain and six red flags – a F1 record. Williams driver Carlos Sainz will start in second (one of the team’s best performances all year) and Liam Lawson (who was demoted by Red Bull a few months ago) will start in third.

Meanwhile, championship leader Oscar Piastri will start in ninth place slipping on the apex of turn three and crashing into the barriers.

“I think I just braked a little bit late,” he said in a post-race interview. “Disappointing, obviously. I felt like the car was in a good place.

“The first two corners were really good, then I don’t know if I just tried a bit too much or, you know, the rain has been around.”

Meanwhile, his championship contender Lando Norris was unable to capitalise on his rival’s mistake, producing an error-riddled lap that earned him seventh place.

It was also a luckless day for both Ferraris after Leclerc hit the barrier at Turn 15 to bring out the red flag and prevent anyone else from finishing a lap time.
