Hikers made the grisly discovery of two dead women close to Victoria’s highest peak on Friday afternoon.
Police said the bodies were in a remote area not far from Mount Bogong that was accessible only by foot. Police had set up camp at the scene and said they would wait until daylight before a recovery operation on Saturday. The deaths were not being treated as suspicious.
Emergency services were first called after reports two bodies had been found at Lendenfeld Point about 1pm on Friday, sparking a search that took several hours and involved several police squads and a helicopter.
On Friday night, police confirmed they had found the women dead.
“Two hikers came across the scene near Cleve Cole Hut and called Triple Zero (000),” police said in a statement.
“At this stage the identity of the women is not known, but it appears the pair, believed aged in their 20s or 30s, may have been in the area to hike and camp.”
Police are appealing for information from the public to assist in identifying those involved, as they were not aware of any current missing person reports.
Lendenfeld Point lies on a treeless exposed ridge near Mount Bogong, Victoria’s highest peak. The area is popular with hikers and experienced skiiers in winter.
