Western Sydney commuters have been hit with significant delays after a truck carrying a crane smashed into a bridge.

The crash took place on Woodville Rd in Granville when the flatbed truck tried to navigate past a railway bridge, smashing the crane and decoupling the massive piece of machinery from the vehicle.

Imagery taken by the Sunrise chopper shows the hulking piece of construction equipment sprawled across the road as traffic backs up behind it.

Live Traffic shows slow-moving traffic as far back as Rowell St in the left-hand lane of the Great Western Highway leading up to the Woodville Road exit.

Southbound traffic on Raymond St also appears to be affected.
