Popular Channel 7 weather presenter Sam McMillan, better known as Sam Mac, has taken a cheeky swipe at network rival Danika Mason after ‘splitting the G’ in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

In his first Sunrise weather cross, shortly after 6am, the 43-year-old shared the outlook for the day from The Tea Cozy in the Rocks, a popular location for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

After downing a green scone, the presenter attempted to ‘split the G’, a popular Irish pub tradition where the drinker attempts to take a single, large first sip of a Guinness, with the aim of landing the stout’s white creamy head perfectly on the middle of the ‘G’ in the word Guiness.

In his first attempt, McMillan split the G almost perfectly before taking a shot at rival network presenter Mason over her trainwreck Winter Olympics cross where she slurred her words on national TV.

“Are we saying that’s a win?” McMillan asked Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington.

“The reason I have done this so early is because I thought I’d be doing this at every cross today and by the end of the show I would be Danika Mason.

“So that is absolutely crazy that we split the G on cross one.”

Shirvington chimed in saying, “It’s pretty close” before holding back his laughter over the Mason barb.

Barr quickly took control and moved on to the next segment.

The cheeky dig comes after Mason apologised for her on-air trainwreck last month, which occurred while fronting up to present the morning sports bulletin from Livigno at the Milano Cortina Games in Italy.

Mason raised eyebrows as she stumbled over her words repeatedly in an awkward live cross.

The 34-year-old was speaking to Karl Stefanovic and Jayne Azzopardi when she lost her train of thought while the panel discussed the price of coffee, with Stefanovic describing Mason as a frozen iguana.

Mason said: “The price of coffee over here is actually fine … it’s actually the price of coffee in the US we have to get used to … I’m not sure about the iguanas? Where are we going with that one?

“Anyway, let’s get into today’s sport because there’s plenty happening back home.”

Addressing the drama the following day, Mason said she was a little bit embarrassed and had misjudged the situation after enjoying a drink.

“Before we do go, I just want to take a moment, if that’s okay, just to apologise,” Mason said.

“I also wanted to thank everyone who has reached out. I’m just a little bit embarrassed.

“I totally misjudged a situation. I shouldn’t have had a drink, and especially in these conditions. It’s cold, we’ve got altitude, and not having had dinner probably didn’t help as well.

“But I want to take full responsibility. It’s not the standard that I set for myself. So in saying that, I’m really sorry … and I’m grateful for those messages that I have received as well.

“But we have an amazing few days left here at the Winter Olympics as well, so hopefully we can turn our attention back to that. And I’ll be back in about half an hour’s time for more sport right here.”
