Shocking footage has captured the heart-stopping moment police swerved to avoid an alleged drunken driver travelling on the wrong side of the road.

Just before 9pm on Tuesday, a silver Honda Jazz hatchback was allegedly travelling northbound in the southbound lane of Frizzo Connection Rd at Palmview, narrowly missing a marked police car.

Police allege the vehicle was travelling at more than 100 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

Maroochydore Sergeant Darren Nolan described the alleged incident as an extreme example of reckless driving.

“It is the most dangerous and reckless display of driving I have personally witnessed in my 38 years of policing,” Sergeant Nolan said in a statement issued by police.

“It was just pure luck and fortune that no one was seriously injured or even worse, killed.”

The footage released by police shows the officer confronting the 26-year-old Morayfield woman immediately after the near miss on Pignata Rd.

“What was all that about?” he asked.

“I freaked out,” she replied.

“You freaked out? You almost hit me head on,” the officer said.

Police allege the woman returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.204 per cent, more than four times the legal limit.

In the footage, she is seen being escorted into the police vehicle and asking whether the station has “free Wi-Fi”, which the officer confirms.

The woman has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, and driving under the influence of liquor.

She is due to face Maroochydore Magistrates Court on April 28.
