Lachlan Kennedy has produced a sensational display to beat Gout Gout in the Maurie Plant Meet 200 metres for the second year running.
Kennedy, 22, had already made headlines earlier on Saturday night in Melbourne by clocking a new meet record of 10.04 in the 100m.
He then followed that up with a breathtaking start in the 200m, flying off the line and beyond Gout Gout before the bend.
Gout Gout came back strongly in the closing stages but it was not enough as Kennedy won with a season’s best time of 20.38 seconds.
After the race, commentator Bruce McAvaney hailed Kennedy, saying: “We’ve seen it before and he’s done it again. He’s brilliant, he really is. He was magnificent tonight.
“What he did in that first 100m is absolutely breathtaking. Gout acknowledges the fact that at the moment, Lachie is the No. 1.”
