The Western Australian government has activated its emergency powers on fuel to force suppliers to divert stock to where it is needed most.
Premier Roger Cook was forced to make the declaration on Wednesday after writing to six companies to ask for sensitive details, such as how much petrol and diesel is left, incoming shipments and delivery timetables, but three of the six refused to hand it over.
“Let me be very clear, we are not declaring a state of emergency. We are utilising the emergency powers under the Fuel, Energy and Power Resources Act,” he said.
“This is not what people experienced under Covid. It’s a completely different act of Parliament.
“It’s very specific powers which we need in order to create some transparency around fuel supply chains.”
Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said the declaration allows the state to comply with the Commonwealth’s level two of the national plan, which is “keep Australia moving”.
“Full transparency is crucial for staying ahead of the situation and keeping WA’s economy running and protecting our way of life,” she said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been torched overnight for his national address where he urged Aussies to take public transport where they can to conserve fuel and encouraged people to holiday this Easter as many sectors relied on business.
