The longstanding federal director of the Liberal Party has announced he is stepping down from the role at the “right time”, after nine years in the top job.

Andrew Hirst said it was time to hand over to new organisational leadership and allow for a seamless transition before the next federal election.

He was first appointed federal director of the party in 2017 and led the campaign behind Scott Morrison’s surprise 2019 victory at the polls.

Mr Hirst will step away from his role in June following the following the Party’s next Federal Council meeting and the Farrar by-election.

In a statement, Mr Hirst said despite setbacks that should not be minimised a lot had been achieved over the last nine years.

“Our Party faces significant challenges that must be confronted with renewed energy and determination,” he said.

“I have great confidence in the leadership of Angus Taylor and Jane Hume as the custodians of our Party, and I wish them and the parliamentary team well for the future.”

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor and deputy leader Jane Hume issued a joint statement saying they had valued Mr Hirst’s steady judgment, professionalism and commitment to the party.

“He has taken on demanding roles during some very tough campaigns, in the 2013 election campaign, and again in 2019, where he was crucial in delivering a result few thought possible – and he’s done so with resilience and integrity,” the party leaders said.

“This job often happens behind the scenes, but Andrew’s contribution has been significant, helping to hold the organisation together and ensuring we were always fighting hard for the values we believe in.

“We now turn our focus to the work ahead: continuing to rebuild, strengthen our team, and earn the trust of Australians.”

Liberal Party federal president John Olsen thanked Mr Hirst for his dedicated service to the party.

“Dealing with diverse and multiple stakeholders requires calm, clear thinking, and a strategic approach. All hallmarks of Andrew’s significant service and contribution,” he said.

“I wish him well and success in the next chapter of his career path.”

Nationals leader Matt Canavan thanked Mr Hirst for nearly two decades of service to the Coalition.

“Andrew has the most important qualities of the best political advisers. Andrew is calm under pressure, brings perspective not panic, and is mission focused on victory,” he said.

“Andrew has always been a dependable friend of The Nationals and, on behalf of The Nats, we wish him all the best in the future.”
