Sarah Paulson is mourning the heartbreaking loss of her close friend, Diane Keaton.
According to Page Six, the American Horror Story actress was seen visibly emotional outside Keaton’s home on Saturday, October 11, just hours after news broke of the Oscar winner’s death.
The outlet reported that Paulson, 50, was joined by several other women leaving the house, with sources confirming the two had been friends “for many years.”
Their friendship was well known in Hollywood circles and even documented in a 2021 Interview Magazine feature, where Keaton answered 25 questions from her friends.
One of those came from Paulson, who asked, “If your house was on fire and you could only save one thing, what would it be?” Keaton had replied with her trademark warmth and humor, “My dog, Reggie.”
Paulson followed with another question, “What person, place, or thing makes your heart sing? (You can say me.)” Keaton playfully agreed, responding, “Of course, Sarah, you make my heart sing. My friends make my heart sing. My kids make my heart sing. But also, Lillet Blanc makes my heart sing. With lots of ice.”
Following the tragic news of Keaton’s passing, tributes poured in from fans and friends alike.
Her First Wives Club costar Goldie Hawn shared an emotional message on Instagram, writing, “Diane, we aren’t ready to lose you. You’ve left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination.”
Hawn continued, “How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to ‘shut up’ honey. There was, and will be, no one like you.”
She went on to recall their time working together, saying, “You stole the hearts of the world and shared your genius with millions, making films that made us laugh and cry in ways only you could. I was blessed to make First Wives Club with you, our days starting with coffee in the makeup trailer, laughing and joking, right through to the very last day of filming. It was a roller coaster of love.”
While a cause of death has not yet been revealed, Keaton’s longtime friend and songwriter Carole Bayer Sager told PEOPLE that the actress appeared noticeably frail in recent weeks.
“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,” Sager said. “She had lost so much weight.”
Sager shared that Keaton had been spending time in Palm Springs earlier this year after her home suffered damage from the January 2025 California wildfires.
“She had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything,” said Sager.
“She was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost.”
Remembering her late friend, Sager described Keaton as “a magic light for everyone.”
She added, “I just loved her. She was so special, she just lit up a room with her energy. She was happy and upbeat and taking photographs of everything she saw. She was completely creative; she never stopped creating.”
