Cameron Diaz spotted filming new project in New York as acting comeback resumes

Cameron Diaz has been spotted filming a new romantic comedy in New York City as she continues her return to acting after a long break.

The 53-year-old actor was photographed on March 13 filming scenes in the West Village. She was seen outside the Olive Tree Cafe & Comedy Cellar wearing a long black leather coat, a scarf, and black lace-up boots, with her blonde hair styled in curls.

The yet-to-be-titled film is being directed by Stephen Merchant, who also stars in the project. More reports reveal the movie revolves around a British workaholic employed at a luxury New York hotel who needs a wife for appearances. He then strikes a deal with a struggling stand-up comedian, played by Diaz, who needs health insurance. Their fake marriage begins as a practical arrangement but eventually blooms into a real romance.

The film is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios from a script co-written by Merchant and John Butler.

Diaz returned to acting after a decade away from Hollywood with the 2025 Netflix action-comedy Back in Action, in which she starred alongside Jamie Foxx.

She is also set to appear in another upcoming Netflix project, the action-comedy Bad Day, directed by Jake Szymanski. In the film, Diaz plays a single mother trying to keep a promise to her daughter during a chaotic day.

In addition, Diaz will reprise her voice role as Princess Fiona in Shrek 5, which is currently scheduled for release in 2027.

The actor stepped away from the industry after appearing in Annie in 2014. During that time, she married Benji Madden and welcomed two children. Diaz has since said she feels grateful “that the door was even open for me after a decade.”
