Victoria’s public services app and website have hit a major traffic jam as people rush to get a subsidy on their car registration.

On Monday, a scheme where Victorians can get 20 per cent wiped off their car registration began, but citizens need to apply through the Service Victoria app.

The details on how to apply were not on the app early in the morning, and by late morning the app had crashed.

“We can’t connect to the server for this app or website at this time,” an error message in the app reads.

“There might be too much traffic or a configuration error.”

Anyone trying to login in to Service Victoria on a computer gets a message saying: “We’re experiencing a few technical issues. We apologise for any inconvenience. Please try again later.”

To qualify for the rebate, Victorian motorists need to have paid their rego between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026. After that, people have from Monday until July 31 to apply for their 20 per cent rebate.

The rebate saves up to $186 per vehicle.

The scheme only applies to personal light vehicles – cars, utes, motorbikes or any other vehicle weighing less than 4.5 tonnes.

At 11.42am when a press release from the state government was issued, the site was still down.

“Log into Services Victoria and get 20 per cent off your rego – from today,” Government Services Minister Ingrid Stitt said in the statement.

Monday’s vehicle cost of living relief scheme comes in as Victorians begin paying for public transport again.

In the face of skyrocketing fuel costs earlier this year, the state government made all public transport free for April and May. From Monday, all public transport across the state is half price for the remainder of the year.
