A sunny BBQ day turned into a nightmare for a dog owner in West Yorkshire.
Her name is Alicia Atkinson.
She has two dogs: Ted is a Cocker Spaniel, and Milly is a Springer Spaniel.
As the family enjoyed the BBQ day, Atkinson threw the corn on the cob in the bin.
“It was the first time this year we’d had some decent weather, so we’d had a BBQ.”
But what she did not expect was her two hungry dogs raiding the bin and swallowing the corn cob.
“When we came downstairs, we noticed the dogs had been in the bin,” she told The Mirror.
“There was one stray piece of the cob with a bit of corn still left in it.”
“But it was a pack of four corn on the cob, so I was like, ‘Where are the other three?'”
Though this could seem sweet, however, one of the dogs almost paid with his life.
The dogs became sick after eating the corn cobs, which a frantic Google search said could be ‘life-threatening.’
“I couldn’t find them anywhere. I Googled to see if my dog was okay to eat the cob, and it came up with “Don’t let them eat this; it’s a medical emergency.”
At a clinic, Atkinson spent £500 on medication, wrongly believing the danger was over.
However, the real horror was just beginning
Ted, a cocker spaniel, suffered a bad stomach ache for weeks and stopped eating.
This worried Atkinson, and her worries became a reality when the results of an ultrasound came in.
There is a corn cob blockage inside the six-year-old dog’s stomach.
“I never in a million years thought there was corn on the cob still inside [Ted]. I thought he was just ill.”
In the end, a whopping £5,000 bill from the vet, a child lock on the bin in the kitchen, and a fear of losing Ted are the result of eating just a corn cob.
