Neymar has been named in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite ongoing concerns about his fitness following a long recovery from injury.
The 34-year-old Santos forward, is set to appear at his fourth World Cup.
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, has struggled for consistent fitness since tearing the ACL in his left knee in October 2023.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti defended the decision during a press conference in Rio de Janeiro.
“He has improved his fitness. He will be an important player in this World Cup,” Ancelotti said.
The Italian manager also stressed the importance of experienced players in major tournaments. “He can still improve his fitness until the first match of the World Cup,” Ancelotti added.
“He has experience in this kind of competition, the love of our group; he can create a better environment in this group.”
Brazil’s 26-man squad also includes Vinicius Júnior and Raphinha, while Lyon striker Endrick and Bournemouth forward Rayan earned their first World Cup call-ups.
Brazil open their tournament campaign against Morocco in New Jersey on June 13 before facing Haiti and Scotland in Group C.
