A woman’s body has been found in a home in a northern suburb of Hobart, with police believing she had been there for “several weeks”.

Emergency services were called to a house on Lissadell Court in New Town about 4pm Saturday after the body of a woman was found lying on the floor in the corridor.

While she is yet to be formally identified, police believe she is in her 60s.

Tasmania Police Detective Inspector David Gill said they spoke to a man in his 50s at the residence on Saturday morning, who was detained for a mental health assessment.

Police did not enter the property at the time.

“It wasn’t until later that day that another person attended the address to visit and found the body of the deceased woman on the floor,” Inspector Gill told reporters.

“She was laying on the floor in the corridor.”

A crime scene was then declared at the house.

The man in his 50s was later arrested and taken into custody.

No charges have been laid.

An autopsy will be completed on Monday to determine the cause of the woman’s death.

While the investigation into the incident is ongoing, police are treating her death as suspicious.

“At this stage police are treating the woman’s death as suspicious, however, we are keeping an open mind as to the possibility the woman’s death may be the result of natural causes,” Inspector Gill said.

He said it was likely the woman had been dead for some time before the discovery.

“An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow morning to determine the cause of the woman’s death,” he said.

“At this stage it is believed the woman has been deceased within the residence for several weeks.”

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
