Who Wants To Be A Millionaire fans have been left stumped by a tough question that even host Jeremy Clarkson didn’t know the answer to.

Contestant Jen made it all the way to bagging half a million pounds ($A943,000) during last night’s show, but only walked away with $A120,000 after losing at the second-to-last question.

Reading out the question, Jeremy asked: “According to Guinness World Records, which of these have travelled at over 260 miles per hour during a competitive game or match?”

The four options were: “A. Tennis Ball B. Ice Hockey Puck C. Badminton Shuttlecock or D. Table Tennis Ball.”

Sport question costs woman $823k

Jen was stumped at the question as she admitted she didn’t know the answer, but decided to use her Phone A Friend lifeline.

Phoning her dad, Chris, to help with the answer, it was more bad news as he wasn’t sure either.

Left with a tough decision, Jen had to choose whether to risk the £250K ($A472,000) she had already earned by attempting the £500K ($A943,000) question, or walk away with a quarter of a million pounds.

With no lifelines remaining, she attempted the question and guessed that the answer was an ice hockey puck, which was wrong.

Jen was sent home from the competition with £64,000 ($A120,000), where she had earlier set her lifeline.

Have you guessed the answer yet?

The correct answer was Badminton Shuttlecock.

If you didn’t get it, the question also had viewers at home stuck, as one tweeted: “Still staggered at this £500,000 question.

“I’d have been all in on ice puck and shown to be clueless”.

Host Jeremy Clarkson saw the tweet and replied: “Me too”.

“If it’s any consolation, I’d have said hockey puck too,” said another.
